Mr. Dettelbach, a 1991 graduate of Harvard Law School, was appointed by President Biden and sworn in as the Director of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) in 2022. He began his career as a federal prosecutor in the Civil Rights Division. He became US Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio in 2009.

Most recently, he was a partner at BakerHostetler.
He has also served in several senior policy roles including at the Department of Justice and Chairing the AGAC Civil Rights Subcommittee. He has been honored for his service with numerous awards including the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association's Pace Setter Diversity and Inclusion Award, The Legal Aid Society of Cleveland's Louis Stokes Paragon Award and the Recovery Resources Exemplar Award for leading the multidisiplinary Heroin and Opioid Task Force.
